GUIDE TO CHOOSING CUFFLINKS

A cufflink (also cuff link or cuff-link) is a decorative fastener worn by men or women to fasten the two sides of the cuff on a dress shirt or blouse.

The cufflink shirt first appeared in the early-16th century and were fastened together with “cuff strings.” During the reign of Louis XIV, cuff strings started to give way to boutonsde manchette, or “sleeve buttons,” typically identical pairs of colored glass buttons joined together by a short, linked chain.

By 1715, simple, paste-glass buttons had given way to pairs of two, decoratively painted or jeweled studs, typically diamonds, connected by ornate gold links.

Cufflinks are

  • One of the must-have accessories of a well-groomed man
  • Speaks of sophistication and style
  • Makes ordinary work wear stand out.
  • No other men’s accessory is able to exude elegance and class as well as a pair of cufflinks
  • The art of pairing cufflinks with the patterns or colors of the dress shirt speaks a lot about the individual’s eye for color coordination and taste!

Our store generally stocks hinged-back or also known as the bullet back and toggle cufflinks which are the most secure and least likely to fall off.

Hinged-back cufflinks comprise of a bar that can be swiveled parallel to the link when inserting through the cuff holes. Then swiveled to perpendicular to secure the cuff link’s position.

1. Purpose/ Occasion:

Cufflinks can be used for both formal and informal occasions. For instance, it can be worn to the office, wedding dinners, fancy dress parties or even Christmas gatherings.

For formal occasions, you can pick more subtle designs in muted colors like silver, black and blue with small crystals.

For informal dinners, or fancy dress parties, live it up with outrageous designs, crystals and louder colors to stand out from the crowd. Novelty cufflinks are great as conversation starters!

2. Colour:

Cufflinks should be chosen to match shirts. The safest and easiest to match colours are silver, white, blackand blue. If you are getting a gift for someone you don’t know well, stick to safer colors. The most classic designs are pure silver, or black and silver with crystals.

More flamboyant colors like red/pink should be chosen for more stylish/fashionable men who are able to pair it with suitable shirts and ties.

3.Interest / Preference:

When choosing cufflinks as a gift, it would be best to reflect the individual’s taste/hobbies.

For instance, if the recipient is active and loves outdoor activities, try sporty cufflinks.

Others would love to have links relating to superheros or poker/casino themed cufflinks. If you are looking for something even more special and personalized, opt for our range of custom cufflinks.

Hinged-back cufflinks like the one on our site are very easy to put on – the instructions and video below will show you the steps.

  1. Wear the correct shirt. Put on a dress shirt with French (or Double) cuffs. This sort of shirt has extra long cuffs with no buttons and holes on each side.
  2. Fold back the cuffs, making sure that they form a neat and even line at the end of the sleeves.
  3. Hold the two open edges of the shirt cuff together. Unlike cuffs with buttons where one side of the cuff folds inside the other, with cufflinks, the two sides lay flat away from the wrist.
  4. Make sure the holes for the cufflink line up.
  5. Insert the cufflink and secure it. When your arm is at your side, the decorative part of the cuff link should be facing outwards.
